You Snooze You Lose

The other day I woke up from a delightful nap at the hostel I’m staying in Santorini and the first thing I laid my eyes on was “you snooze you lose” written on the mattress boards of the top bunk next to me. This got me thinking... Usually one equates the “hostel life” with backpackers and that is usually the case. I’ve been asked multiple times throughout this journey when someone sees me carrying around my traveling backpack if I’m a “backpacker” and I find that I don’t know how to answer this question. I don’t think I am. Backpackers are usually hopping from one place to another in just one or two days while I’m traveling the world hoping to get a deep feel for each place I visit. Personally, I don’t think that can be done in one or two days. This is where I differ from these other travelers - I don’t have the “you snooze you lose” mentality because if I don’t see or experience a particular thing one day, I know I have the next day or maybe even the next day to do so. I think I’ve already succumbed to the “island life” plus, I have no outbound flights or ferries to restrict this extremely carefree lifestyle I’ve just become a part of. If you’re nixing a nap in lieu of a guided tour because you’re leaving town in 6 hours, that’s not the life I want to live. Naps are sacred - I think I was in Spain just long enough to adopt this mindset! Siesta time...
